Humanist beliefs and values are as old as civilization and have a history in most societies around the world. Modern humanism is the culmination of these long traditions of reasoning about meaning and ethics, the source of inspiration for many of the world’s great thinkers, artists, and humanitarians, and is interwoven with the rise of modern science. As a global humanist movement, we seek to make all people aware of these essentials of the humanist worldview:
1. Humanists strive to be ethical We accept that morality is inherent to the human condition, grounded in the ability of living things to suffer and flourish, motivated by the benefits of helping and not harming, enabled by reason and compassion, and needing no source outside of humanity.
We affirm the worth and dignity of the individual and the right of every human to the greatest possible freedom and fullest possible development compatible with the rights of others. To these ends we support peace, democracy, the rule of law, and universal legal human rights.
We reject all forms of racism and prejudice and the injustices that arise from them. We seek instead to promote the flourishing and fellowship of humanity in all its diversity and individuality.
We hold that personal liberty must be combined with a responsibility to society. A free person has duties to others, and we feel a duty of care to all of humanity, including future generations, and beyond this to all sentient beings.
We recognise that we are part of nature and accept our responsibility for the impact we have on the rest of the natural world. 2. Humanists strive to be rational We are convinced that the solutions to the world’s problems lie in human reason, and action. We advocate the application of science and free inquiry to these problems, remembering that while science provides the means, human values must define the ends. We seek to use science and technology to enhance human well-being, and never callously or destructively. 3. Humanists strive for fulfillment in their lives We value all sources of individual joy and fulfillment that harm no other, and we believe that personal development through the cultivation of creative and ethical living is a lifelong undertaking.
We therefore treasure artistic creativity and imagination and recognise the transforming power of literature, music, and the visual and performing arts. We cherish the beauty of the natural world and its potential to bring wonder, awe, and tranquility. We appreciate individual and communal exertion in physical activity, and the scope it offers for comradeship and achievement. We esteem the quest for knowledge, and the humility, wisdom, and insight it bestows.
Happiness and Wellbeing 4. Humanism meets the widespread demand for a source of meaning and purpose to stand as an alternative to dogmatic religion, authoritarian nationalism, tribal sectarianism, and selfish nihilism Though we believe that a commitment to human well-being is ageless, our particular opinions are not based on revelations fixed for all time. Humanists recognise that no one is infallible or omniscient, and that knowledge of the world and of humankind can be won only through a continuing process of observation, learning, and rethinking.
For these reasons, we seek neither to avoid scrutiny nor to impose our view on all humanity. On the contrary, we are committed to the unfettered expression and exchange of ideas, and seek to cooperate with people of different beliefs who share our values, all in the cause of building a better world.
We are confident that humanity has the potential to solve the problems that confront us, through free inquiry, science, sympathy, and imagination in the furtherance of peace and human flourishing.
We call upon all who share these convictions to join us in this inspiring endeavor. >"non-doctrinal" view which means .... ? So given a consensus view on a solution proposal, how do humanists coalesce together to deliver or implement the solution proposal? With or without religious followers? How is a humanism pragmatic and not simply an approach to inquiry? “assets\image_1749641234246_0.png” could not be found. Morality and the need to do Good without a God - Humanist Morality Rationale Humanists believe in a rational and ethical approach to life that does not rely on the concept of a divine being. They derive their moral code from human reason, empathy, and the well-being of humanity. Here’s how humanists justify caring for others and maintaining a sense of morality: Human Reason and Empathy: Humanists believe that humans are capable of understanding and applying ethical principles through reason and empathy. They argue that since we are social beings, our actions have consequences on others, and it is in our collective interest to act ethically. Human Flourishing: Humanists focus on making this life meaningful and fulfilling. They believe that living a good life involves helping others and contributing positively to society. This sense of purpose comes from the desire to improve the human condition and create a better world for all. Scientific Method and Evidence: Humanists trust in the scientific method and evidence to understand the world and make decisions. This approach helps in identifying what actions are beneficial and harmful to individuals and society. Universal Human Qualities: Humanists recognize that certain qualities like rationality, empathy, and the ability to understand consequences are universal among humans. These qualities form the basis for a shared moral framework that can be objectively applied across different cultures and individuals. Social Responsibility: Humanists emphasize the importance of social responsibility and the impact of one's actions on others. They believe in creating a society where individuals can thrive and contribute positively, fostering a sense of community and mutual support. Respect for Human Dignity: Humanists respect the dignity and worth of every individual, recognizing that all humans have the capacity for reason and the ability to make moral choices. This respect forms the foundation for treating others with fairness and compassion. In summary, humanists maintain a sense of morality based on human reason, empathy, and the desire to improve and support human well-being, without the need for a belief in a divine being.
Comparison of Buddhism and Humanism
Q : Humanism and Pacifism Relationship Humanism and pacifism are interconnected through their shared emphasis on ethical and moral principles. Humanists, who advocate for rationality and compassion, often support pacifism as a means to resolve conflicts without resorting to violence. For example, the Rationalist Peace Society, established in 1910 by Hypatia Bradlaugh Bonner and J.M. Robertson, aimed to promote peace through rationalist lines, challenging the notion that anti-war work was solely the domain of religious groups
Pacifists from various backgrounds, including humanists, argue against the use of violence and advocate for peaceful methods to resolve conflicts. They believe that the moral law should apply equally to nations and individuals, and that law should be valued higher than war This perspective aligns with humanist values that emphasize reason, ethics, and justice over religious or nationalist ideologies.
Moreover, historical figures such as French philosophers Pierre Bayle, Voltaire, and Denis Diderot, and revolutionary writer Thomas Paine, have contributed to the humanist and rationalist tradition of advocating for peace and pacifism
In summary, humanism and pacifism share a commitment to ethical principles and the belief that conflicts can and should be resolved through peaceful means rather than violence.
Humanism and SyFy
One Life course notes
Conflict or cooperation? How should humanists engage with religion? ..to what end?
It often seems that humanism is ineradicably intertwined with religion, reacting against it and defining itself in opposition. Is this inevitable or desirable and on what terms should that engagement occur? No - it should not be inevitable
Humanism should try to envision a world without religion and champion that - seeking for change via government Contemporary humanists are often keen to distance themselves from the “angry atheists”, those who actively denounce and attack the ideas and societal influence of religion. Why take an absolute position on something - seems like the question of whether god exists is unproductive We frequently hear the assertion that it is better to engage constructively, even work with, members of religious communities and some of its institutions, on the basis that dialogue is better than dispute. YES! Anecdotally, many humanists do feel that a more ‘moderate’ approach is preferable for several reasons: it allows for reasoned discussion with some religious people; it avoids unnecessary conflict; it allays fears that humanists are extreme or threatening; and it’s just easier and less stressful to be a consensus humanist. Sounds like me! But is it really fair to characterise criticism of religion as being dogmatic? Isn’t the very term “angry atheist” just a pejorative developed by the opponents of atheism and secularism in order to undermine those who quite reasonably choose to exercise their freedom of speech to robustly and directly expose religion’s many flaws and misdemeanours? Don't be brought down to the level of those that seek conflict over cooperation Or is the very tendency to focus on religion a valid and productive approach for humanists? Much of the campaigning efforts of Humanists UK is targeted at opposing religious privilege. Some say that this is at the neglect of developing a more positive vision for humanism as a philosophy and social movement in its own right? Yup - I agree with the bit in bold They would prefer it to stress the importance of social justice with a focus on tackling prejudice and inequities. So where should we strike the balance and what tone should we adopt? is humanism just about social justice or is it about other things? rationalism
pragmatism
... Fluffy or spiky, antireligious or pro social justice? Or is this a false dichotomy, can we actually effectively criticise religion without being “militant” and also stand up for good values?
define what humanists consider good values
then seek to change the masses - including via education
religion is just a hurdle - one of many to conquer
ignorance - a result of poor education and educational systems is the bigger evil
corrupt politicians have used religion in their favour in the past and are perhaps the root cause for so many ills in the world Recognise conflict exists Areas of Agreement
Areas of Disagreement debate in whether a god exists or not is futile and unproductive - agree to disagree
disagreements will probably / hopefully dissolve over the long term as people & communities get better educated and self assured and can be more objective Recognise humanism does not excel in certain societal needs as compared to religion Religions provide a sense of community, shared rituals, and a framework for moral and ethical behavior that can be deeply rooted in tradition and personal belief. These elements can foster a strong sense of belonging and identity, which humanism, as a non-religious philosophy, does not inherently provide.23 Religions also offer a structured approach to addressing existential questions and providing comfort during difficult times, such as through prayer, meditation, and communal support. Humanism, while emphasizing reason and compassion, does not offer the same kind of structured, communal support systems that many religions provide. Cooperate on areas where agreement exits Appeal	to rational methods and reason - if / when appropriate levels of education in masses

Here is an outline of the basic points made in the book: The book begins with the famous definition: "There are at least two kinds of games. One could be called finite, the other infinite.
A finite game is played for the purpose of winning,
These have a definite beginning and end.
They are played within fixed boundaries (spatial, temporal, and numerical) and follow unchangeable rules.
The goal is to finish the game and be declared a winner.
An infinite game for the purpose of continuing the play."
These have no finish line and no defined boundaries.
The objective is to keep the game going and prevent it from ending.Finite Rules
These are fixed constraints that players must agree upon before play begins.
They exist to determine who wins.
If the rules are broken or changed during the game, it is no longer the same game.
Infinite Rules:
These change during the course of play.
They are revised whenever the game is "threatened" by a victory or an ending.
The goal of infinite rules is to ensure that as many people as possible remain in the game.
Boundaries vs. Horizons:
Finite players play within boundaries.
Infinite players play with boundaries, viewing them as temporary "horizons" that can be expanded or crossed.Theatrical vs. Dramatic: Carse distinguishes between the "theatrical" roles of finite players (who act according to a script or societal expectations) and the "dramatic" engagement of infinite players (who act in the present, open to surprise).
Self-Veiling: Finite players often "veil" their freedom, convincing themselves that they must play or that the rules are absolute. Infinite players remain aware that they are choosing to play and that they are the authors of their own roles.
Partnership: You cannot play either game alone. In a finite game, you need opponents to defeat; in an infinite game, you need partners to continue the journey.
Power (Finite): Power is the result of winning a finite game. It is measured by titles, ranks, and status earned in the past. To have power is to be able to dictate the end of someone else's play.
Strength (Infinite): Strength is the capacity to continue playing into an unknown future. It is not measured by rank but by the ability to handle surprise and invite others into the game. Strength is self-sufficient; power is comparative.
World Time vs. Play Time: Finite players see time as a limited resource that is running out (they "put play into time"). Infinite players create time through their play (they "put time into play").
Training vs. Education: Training is preparation for a finite goal (learning the rules to win). Education is preparation for the infinite game (learning to expect and respond to the unexpected).
Society as Finite: Carse views many social institutions (nations, religions as hierarchies, competitive markets) as finite games obsessed with property, titles, and boundaries.
Culture as Infinite: Culture is seen as an infinite game of storytelling, art, and tradition that exists only because it is passed on and transformed by new participants.
The Nature of Evil: Carse suggests that evil is the "termination of play"—it is an attempt to end the game by silencing others or making boundaries so rigid that play is no longer possible.
Carse argues that while we all participate in finite games (sports, careers, politics), the most meaningful approach to life is to see these as subsets of a larger, infinite game. The "joyous" infinite player engages with life not to conquer it or secure a title, but to ensure that the "drama" of existence continues indefinitely.

In a rapidly changing world, knowledge is no longer a static asset to be acquired once and stored indefinitely. Instead, real cognitive agility relies on a continuous cycle of learning (acquiring new concepts), unlearning (consciously letting go of outdated paradigms), and relearning (building new models upon that cleared ground). While learning feels additive and rewarding, unlearning requires subtraction, which is often much more difficult. To understand why it is essential, it helps to examine what happens when old knowledge is left unchallenged. Our brains naturally seek efficiency. To conserve energy, the brain relies on established mental models, shortcuts, and habits. However, these models can quickly become outdated. Holding onto "the way things have always been done" creates a cognitive anchor, making it difficult to adapt when circumstances, technology, or environments shift. What was true or effective a decade ago may no longer apply today. In areas like technology, science, and even personal health, sticking to outdated facts creates a barrier to progress. For instance:
In business: Kodak famously struggled because it could not unlearn its core identity as a film company to fully embrace digital imaging.
In science: Paradigm shifts only occur when the scientific community agrees to unlearn long-held assumptions in the face of new empirical data.
The brain does not have infinite attention. Unlearning is a deliberate process of decluttering. By letting go of ineffective habits, redundant workflows, or obsolete data, you free up the mental bandwidth required to process and integrate new information.Unlearning is not about erasing your memory or pretending the past didn't happen. Rather, it is the process of disinvesting from a specific belief or method so that it no longer dictates your actions. [Learn] --> Acquire new knowledge & skills | [Unlearn] --> Challenge assumptions, identify what is obsolete, & let go | [Relearn] --> Build updated models based on current reality Recognition: Stepping outside of your default habits to identify mental models that no longer yield the desired outcomes.
Reframing: Actively questioning existing assumptions by asking, "What evidence do I have that this is still true?"
Deliberate Refraining: Choosing not to fall back on old, comfortable routines when faced with a familiar problem, allowing new pathways to form.
Continuous learning is the natural counterpart to unlearning. Without it, unlearning leaves a vacuum. The brain remains capable of changing and reorganizing itself throughout life. Engaging with novel, complex tasks—such as learning a new language, mastering a technical tool, or picking up a physical skill—strengthens neural connections and builds a "cognitive reserve." This reserve helps maintain mental sharpness and adaptability.Whether adapting to new personal circumstances, shifting lifestyles, or evolving global realities, a dedication to learning keeps you engaged with the world. It shifts your perspective from a fixed mindset ("I know what I know") to a growth mindset ("I am capable of figuring this out").Embracing this cycle ensures that experience doesn't become a trap. While accumulated knowledge is valuable, the ability to assess it critically—keeping what works, discarding what is obsolete, and exploring fresh ideas—is what allows for continuous personal growth.

Prawns Black Bean Vegetable stir fry

Preparing prawns correctly is the secret to a great stir-fry texture. If cooked from frozen or improperly defrosted, they often become rubbery or watery.
The Cold Water Method (Fastest): Place the frozen prawns in a sealed zip-lock bag. Submerge the bag in a bowl of cold tap water. Change the water every 15 minutes. They should be ready in about 30–45 minutes.
The Fridge Method (Safest): Place the prawns in a covered bowl in the fridge overnight.
The Golden Rule: Never use warm or hot water to defrost prawns, as this starts the cooking process and ruins the texture. Always pat them bone-dry with a paper towel before cooking to ensure they sear rather than steam.
This recipe focuses on bold umami flavors and a quick cook time to keep the vegetables crisp.
Protein: 250g-300g large prawns (defrosted, peeled, and deveined).
The Sauce: 2 tbsp fermented black beans (rinsed and roughly chopped) or store-bought black bean garlic sauce.
1 tbsp soy sauce.
1 tbsp Chinese cooking wine (Shaoxing) or dry sherry.
1 tsp sugar or honey.
100ml vegetable stock or water mixed with 1 tsp cornflour. Aromatics: 3 cloves garlic (minced), 1-inch ginger (grated), 1 red chili (optional).
Vegetables: Choose 3–4 of the following: Red bell peppers (sliced).
Broccoli florets (cut small).
Sugar snap peas or mangetout.
Baby corn.
Spring onions (cut into 2-inch lengths). Prep the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, cooking wine, sugar, and the stock/cornflour mixture. Set aside.
Sear the Prawns: Heat 1 tbsp of high-heat oil (like peanut or vegetable oil) in a wok or large frying pan over high heat. Add the prawns and stir-fry for 60–90 seconds until they just turn pink. Remove them from the pan and set aside.
Stir-Fry Vegetables: Add another splash of oil if needed. Toss in your denser vegetables (broccoli, carrots) first for 2 minutes, followed by quicker-cooking ones (peppers, peas).
Add Aromatics: Push the veg to the sides. Add the garlic, ginger, and black beans to the center. Stir for 30 seconds until fragrant.
Combine: Return the prawns to the pan. Pour the sauce over everything.
Thicken: Stir-fry for another minute until the sauce bubbles and thickens, coating everything in a glossy dark glaze. Serve immediately.
This dish fits well with a plant-dense, metabolic-friendly regimen. To maximize the nutritional profile:
Fiber Boost: Use a high ratio of green vegetables like broccoli and mangetout to support gut health.
Lower Sodium: Since fermented black beans are naturally very salty, you may want to use a "reduced-salt" soy sauce to keep the dish balanced.
Grain Pairing: If you are practicing time-restricted eating, this protein-heavy dish pairs well with a small portion of brown rice or quinoa, or it can be served "naked" as a high-protein, low-carb evening meal.
If you are planning a long-distance cycling tour or training session in the coming days:
Carbohydrate Loading: Consider serving this over a larger portion of noodles or rice to replenish glycogen stores.
Digestibility: Prawns are a lean, "light" protein, making this an excellent pre-ride dinner that won't leave you feeling sluggish the next morning.

Felt like a chocolate cake and Gemini helped me use things I had in the cupboard to keep it healthy
The PhD Smart Plant Protein provides a solid protein base with no sugar, while the 81% Dark Chocolate Chips offer intense flavor and beneficial polyphenols without excessive sweetness. To turn these into a cake, you'll need a few pantry staples to provide structure and moisture, as protein powder alone can become dry when baked. This is a quick, single-serve option that maximizes the "healthy" profile by avoiding refined flours and added sugars.
Ingredients:
1 scoop PhD Smart Plant Protein (Chocolate Cookie flavor)
1 tbsp Unsweetened cocoa powder (for extra richness)
1/2 tsp Baking powder
3 tbsp Unsweetened almond milk (or water)
1 tbsp Appplesauce or mashed banana (for moisture)
1 tbsp Nibble Dark Chocolate Chips (folded in at the end)
Instructions: Mix: Combine the dry ingredients in a microwave-safe mug.
Hydrate: Stir in the liquid and fruit puree until smooth. (added water till Greek yogurt like)
Add Chips: Gently fold in the dark chocolate chips.
Cook: Microwave on high for 45–60 seconds. The center should still look slightly soft.
Rest: Let it sit for 1 minute to finish setting before eating.
Given your focus on specific dietary and lifestyle goals, these ingredients align well with several of your established habits:
Nutrient Density & Fasting: Since you prioritize nutrient density and track protein intake, using a plant-based protein powder helps hit your daily targets while remaining compatible with a time-restricted eating window.
Low-Sugar Profile: The combination of 81% dark chocolate and zero-sugar protein powder supports metabolic flexibility by minimizing insulin spikes.
Convenience for Recovery: After a long-distance cycling tour (up to 100km), a protein-dense snack like this can assist with muscle recovery while keeping you satiated.
If you prefer a larger bake to slice and keep, you can scale the mug cake into a small loaf tin. Replace the applesauce with Greek yogurt (if you consume dairy) or nut butter to increase the healthy fats and slow the digestion of the protein, making it an excellent steady-energy snack for your next ride.2026-05-05 : Tasted good but mousse consistency. It avoids the need for deep frying while maintaining that classic chip-shop texture.
Potatoes: 2-3 large Maris Piper or King Edward potatoes (floury varieties work best).
Oil: 1-2 tablespoons of vegetable, sunflower, or rapeseed oil.
Seasoning: Sea salt and cracked black pepper. Prep: Scrub the potatoes thoroughly under cold water to remove any dirt. Keep the skins on. Slice them into chips roughly 1cm thick.
Soak: Place the cut chips in a bowl of cold water for at least 20–30 minutes. This removes excess starch and is the secret to a crispy exterior.
Dry: Drain the chips and pat them bone dry with a clean tea towel or kitchen paper. Any moisture left will cause them to steam rather than crisp.
Coat: Toss the chips in a bowl with the oil and a pinch of salt until every surface is lightly glistening.
Cook: Preheat the air fryer to 200°C.
Place the chips in the basket. Do not overcrowd; cook in batches if necessary.
Cook for 18–22 minutes.
Crucial Step: Shake the basket vigorously every 5 minutes to ensure an even cook. Finish: Once golden brown and crisp, remove and season with extra salt immediately while hot.
Based on your preferences for plant-diverse nutrition and home-cooked fermentation, here are a few ways to tailor this recipe:
The "Plant-Point" Topping: After cooking, toss the hot chips in a mix of finely chopped parsley, garlic, and lemon zest (Gremolata). It adds fresh plant diversity to the meal.
Spiced Variation: Add a teaspoon of smoked paprika or turmeric to the oil coating for anti-inflammatory benefits and a deep golden color.
Fermented Side Pairing: These chips pair exceptionally well with a side of homemade sauerkraut or kimchi. The acidity of the fermented vegetables cuts through the richness of the oil and provides a probiotic boost to the meal. Protein Pairing: To maintain your high-protein goals, serve these alongside a lean protein source like grilled chicken, tempeh, or a white fish fillet.
Oil Choice: If you prefer to avoid seed oils, Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Avocado Oil work well in the air fryer, though the flavor profile will shift slightly.
How are your current fermentation projects coming along—do you have a batch of sauerkraut ready to serve with these?

To maximize the battery life, it is recommended to avoid deep discharges and to keep the battery charged between 20% and 80% whenever possible.

The discussion outlines five psychological and strategic pitfalls that often prevent successful infrastructure changes in cities. 1. "You vs. The World" (The Lone Wolf Mentality): The Mistake: Advocates often feel like solitary "warriors" fighting against a car-centric society.
The Fix: Realize that politicians don't care about making one person happy; they care about large groups. Transition from being "the crazy bike person" to building a broad base (e.g., getting a school principal involved makes it about "protecting kids" rather than "pleasing one cyclist"). [01:19] 2. Only Building Coalitions with "Bike People": The Mistake: Restricting your circle to existing cyclists who are already convinced.
The Fix: Partner with non-cyclists who benefit from the change. [[02:29] (expand to drill down in each)(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7d2gkfikNfs&t=149)] I. Cycle-Related & Micro-Mobility Businesses
collapsed:: true Rental & Shared Mobility Companies: Incentive: Higher ridership directly increases their revenue.
Contribution: They possess "heat map" data showing where people actually want to ride, which can be used to justify where new lanes should be built. Local Bike Shops (LBS) & Repair Cafes: Incentive: More people on bikes means more maintenance, parts, and accessory sales.
Contribution: These serve as "community hubs" where flyers can be distributed and petitions signed by a diverse customer base. Last-Mile Delivery Services: Incentive: Cargo bike couriers and delivery riders (food, parcels) need safe, efficient routes to meet delivery windows and reduce insurance costs.
Contribution: They provide a "business efficiency" argument that appeals to conservative or commerce-focused politicians.
II. General Business & Economic Partners
collapsed:: true Local High Street Retailers (Cafes, Bookshops, etc.): Incentive: Studies consistently show that pedestrians and cyclists spend more per month in local shops than drivers, who often head to out-of-town malls.
Contribution: Testimonials from shop owners about increased footfall can neutralize "anti-business" arguments from opponents. Major Local Employers: Incentive: Large companies (including engineering firms or universities) want to reduce the cost of providing employee parking and improve staff health/retention.
Contribution: Letters from major taxpayers/employers carry significant weight with city councils.
III. Institutional & Social Partners
collapsed:: true Educational Institutions (Universities & Schools): Incentive: Ensuring the safety of students—particularly those in engineering or environmental programs who may be studying sustainable urbanism—is a primary duty.
Contribution: Organizing "Bike Trains" for children or students creates a powerful visual of vulnerable road users that is difficult for politicians to ignore. Healthcare Providers & Public Health Experts: Incentive: Reducing sedentary lifestyles and air pollution lowers the burden on local health services (like the NHS).
Contribution: Doctors and public health officials provide "expert authority" that frames the issue as a medical necessity rather than a lifestyle choice. Faith-Based Organizations & Community Centers: Incentive: These groups often care about "equity" and "stewardship," ensuring that elderly or low-income members who don't drive can still access services safely.
Contribution: They offer access to a demographic that politicians view as "reliable voters," moving the needle on the "political consequences" mentioned in the video. IV. The "Unexpected" Allies
collapsed:: true Motoring Associations (The "Rational Driver"): Incentive: Every person on a bike is one less car in front of a driver in a traffic jam. Better infrastructure for others means less congestion for those who must drive.
Contribution: Support from a "car-friendly" group can be the ultimate "shield" for a politician worried about a backlash. 3. Thinking Too Short-Term: The Mistake: Expecting immediate results (like a bike lane next month) leads to burnout when progress is slow.
The Fix: Accept that transportation advocacy has no end date. Use "stepping stone" victories to "daisy chain" smaller fights into long-term systemic change, similar to how cities like Amsterdam or Montreal evolved over decades. [04:28] 4. Separating Culture Wars from Infrastructure: The Mistake: Focusing purely on the "party" side (bike mixers, social rides) without linking them to policy.
The Fix: Create a "virtuous cycle." Use social events to gather a crowd, then use that crowd's energy to sign petitions or pass out flyers. Cultural shifts must reaffirm and demand political infrastructure. [06:05] 5. Lack of Political Consequences: The Mistake: Allowing decision-makers to say "no" without any follow-up or accountability.
The Fix: Make it difficult for politicians to ignore you. If a mayor says no, ensure every person who signed your petition knows exactly who blocked the safety measure. It’s not about personal conflict, but about making sure the "boop on the snoot" (political pressure) is felt. [07:54] Engineering & Urban Systems: The video emphasizes that infrastructure isn't just a technical challenge but a social and political negotiation.
The "virtuous cycle" mentioned [06:05] aligns with feedback loops often studied in Environmental Engineering and urban planning, where increased visibility leads to better infrastructure, which in t

<figure><img src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/7d2gkfikNfs/mqdefault.jpg"></figure>

bike camera

record any incidents - in front - and back

Skarper focuses on portability and zero-cable installation via the rear brake disc, while
the Yosepower A3 Pro is a semi permanent, high-value hub-motor replacement with integrated torque sensing. - ### Skarper eBike Drive System
- **Strengths** - **Versatility:** Can be swapped between multiple bikes if they all have a DiskDrive rotor installed. - **Ease of Use:** No wires or permanent battery mounts; the bike looks like a standard bicycle when the unit is removed. - **Security:** You can take the entire motor and battery with you in a bag, leaving only a specialized rotor on the bike. - **Smart Tech:** Developed with Red Bull Advanced Technologies; includes "DynamicClimb" which uses sensors to detect inclines before you feel them.
- **Weaknesses** - **Cost:** Significantly more expensive than traditional hub kits. - **Weight Distribution:** Adds concentrated weight to one side of the rear chainstay, which some riders find slightly "unnatural" initially. - **Compatibility:** Only works with bikes using disc brakes; requires replacing your rear rotor with their proprietary version. - **Noise:** Some users report a unique mechanical sound compared to silent hub motors. ---
- ### Yosepower A3 Pro
- **Strengths** - **Value:** One of the most affordable ways to get a torque-sensing e-bike experience. - **Ride Feel:** The integrated torque sensor in the cassette provides a more natural, "proportional" boost compared to basic cadence sensors. - **Stealthy Design:** The bottle-style battery and hub motor are relatively discreet; the A3 Pro version includes a clean color LCD and integrated light. - **Weather Resistance:** Rated IPX6, making it highly resilient against heavy rain and puddles.
- **Weaknesses** - **Permanent Setup:** Requires replacing your rear wheel and routing cables along the frame. - > Its one cable to the motor and one cable to controller and one cable to headlight. Just use velcro - > replacing a wheel is straightforward! - **Battery Range:** The compact $7\text{Ah}$ battery is smaller than standard e-bike batteries; heavy users or those in hilly areas report actual ranges as low as $20\text{ km}$. - > Need to just use as a top up "reserve tank" to a good donor bike with appropriate gears and fitness levels. Its not a complete eBike experience - **Mechanical Skill:** While "easy" for a kit, it requires indexing gears (if swapping cassettes) and managing torque arms/spacing. - > Currently have a 7 speed so plan to stick to this and adding a spacer - as kit normally stipulates 8 speed minimum - > Torque arm is probably worth installing but doubtful if really necessary - **Proprietary Parts:** The integrated controller/battery mount can make third-party repairs or battery upgrades difficult. The core difference between these two systems—and how they differ from standard e-bike kits—lies in how they interpret your pedaling. Most budget kits use a simple cadence sensor (an on/off switch based on speed), but both the Skarper and the Yosepower A3 Pro aim for a more refined experience using torque-sensing logic, though they achieve it in very different ways. Sensor Type: Wireless Bluetooth Cadence + Proprietary Algorithm How it works: Unlike a traditional cadence sensor that sits on the bottom bracket, Skarper uses a wireless sensor on the crank. It combines this with a complex algorithm (developed with Red Bull Advanced Technologies) to simulate a torque-sensing feel. The "Cadence+" Experience: Strength: Because it’s wireless, there are no cables to route. The algorithm helps it feel smoother than a basic £15 cadence sensor.
Weakness: It is still fundamentally a cadence-based system. It cannot "know" if you are struggling on a steep hill versus spinning easily on a flat—it simply knows your RPM. To compensate, it uses "DynamicClimb" software to guess when you need more power based on speed changes. Sensor Type: Integrated Cassette Torque Sensor (Kclamber) How it works: This is a significant upgrade over older Yosepower kits. The sensor is built inside the rear hub/cassette body. It measures the actual mechanical strain (torque) you apply to the chain. The True Torque Experience: Strength: This provides a "true" proportional response. If you push twice as hard to get up a hill, the motor immediately delivers twice the boost. Users report a very natural feel that "mimics" expensive mid-drive ebikes. Weakness: Torque sensors can be more sensitive to rain or mechanical wear over several years. Additionally, some users find that you must put in effort to get power—if you want to "ghost pedal" (spin legs with zero effort) to get home when tired, a torque sensor will give you very little help. Choose Skarper if: You want the cleanest look and don't mind a "smart cadence" feel. It is better for those who prioritize taking the motor off the bike easily for security or weight. Choose Yosepower A3 Pro if: You want a natural cycling sensation at a fraction of the cost. It is better for "active" riders who want the motor to act as an extension of their own strength rather than a motor that takes over.

IMG_4732

<figure><img src="."></figure>

IMG_4731 1

<figure><img src="."></figure>

IMG_4731

<figure><img src="."></figure>

IMG_4729

<figure><img src="."></figure>

Pasted image 20260505090231

<figure><img src="."></figure>

Top Tube (Cockpit) Saddle & Tool Bag

supporting cyclists through lobbying, member services, and local groups focused on recreational and utility cycling It is the trading name of the Cyclists’ Touring Club (CTC), which was founded in 1878 and is recognised as the oldest transport organisation in the world Cycling UK campaigns for safer cycling infrastructure, provides resources and insurance for members, and organises events such as the British Cycle Quest and the Big Bike Revival It is also a member of the European Cyclists’ Federation and a founder of the Slower Speeds Initiative
In London, the London Cycling Campaign LCC (LCC) is a prominent advocacy group that campaigns for safer and more accessible cycling in the city and I’m a member of this
LCC - various boroughs in London have setup various groups to encourage cycling LCC works to ensure that everyone can enjoy cycling safely and actively influences policy and infrastructure development Additionally, Cycling UK has local groups in London that organise regular rides, including beginner sessions and longer-distance events
The London Cycling Campaign (LCC) operates with a decentralized structure built around local member groups in each of the 33 London boroughs
These local groups act as the grassroots arm of the organization, liaising with borough councils, Transport for London, Sustrans, and other authorities to influence local transport plans and developments affecting cyclists and pedestrians
Each borough has its own group, such as Camden Cyclists, which runs campaigns, organizes cycle rides, maintenance workshops, and social events, and engages in local consultations
Membership in LCC automatically includes affiliation with a local borough group, though participation is open to anyone interested, regardless of residence The central LCC organization supports these groups while running citywide campaigns on issues like junction safety, lorry danger, and increasing cycling among women With over 12,000 paying members and 20,000 supporters, LCC combines local action with strategic advocacy to promote cycling across London
The Bicycle Association is another key organisation, representing the UK cycle industry as a national trade association.
It works to grow everyday cycling by advocating for the industry’s interests with government and stakeholders, aiming to remove barriers to cycling for all

A blog is a stream of thoughts captured at a specific moment, while a digital garden is a growing ecosystem of interconnected ideas.
To Share Updates: Blogs are ideal for announcing news, telling a story with a beginning and end, or documenting a specific event.
To Build Authority: Frequent posting shows active engagement in a field at a specific point in time.
To Capture a Snapshot: It preserves how you felt or what you knew on a specific Tuesday in 2024. To Reduce "Publishing Anxiety": Since notes are never "finished," there is less pressure for a post to be perfect. You can publish a "seedling" and let it grow.
To Facilitate Compound Learning: By linking notes together, you discover new patterns between seemingly unrelated topics.
To Manage Complexity: It acts as a personal wiki where information is easy to find via relationships rather than scrolling through an archive.
Since you are moving toward an Obsidian-based workflow and moving away from Logseq, understanding this distinction is vital for how you structure your new vault.Obsidian is natively designed for the "Digital Garden" philosophy. Unlike Logseq, which is strictly outline-based, Obsidian allows you to treat your notes as "evergreen" documents.
Engineering Knowledge: For technical subjects like chemical and environmental engineering, a digital garden allows for the creation of "MOCs" (Maps of Content). You can link thermodynamics to fluid mechanics without being tied to the date you learned them.
Project Continuity: Instead of searching through "Daily Notes" to find where you left off on a home server configuration or a solar battery installation, a garden approach lets you have a single, evolving document for "Solar Project" that stays current.
The "Folder vs. Link" Balance: In your migration, consider using folders sparingly for high-level categories (e.g., Finance, Technical, Cycling) and using internal links (Note Name) to create the "garden" structure. Use Properties (YAML): You can track the "growth stage" of a note (e.g., status: seedling, status: budding, status: evergreen) to keep track of what needs more research.
Refining Technical Records: For your home server and Docker configurations, a digital garden note is superior to a blog post because you can update the version numbers and commands in-place, rather than writing a "New Setup" post every six months.

Rise in Fires along with other countries (US/NY) from Conversion Kits AND Manufactured e bikes WHY DO Ebike Battery Explode? E-bike batteries typically explode due to several factors, including Defects in manufacturing.
Mechanical damage - such as impacts from crashes or falls, can harm the separator layer within the battery, leading to short circuits and uncontrolled energy discharges
Overheating - can also cause issues, especially if the battery is exposed to extreme temperatures or charged improperly Additionally, using incompatible chargers or those not recommended by the manufacturer can lead to battery fires and explosions Batteries from reputable manufacturers that have undergone testing and certifications are generally considered safe However, problems may arise when batteries are damaged, modified, or poorly made It is important to avoid purchasing batteries or chargers that are not recommended by the manufacturer and to ensure that your battery meets safety standards by looking for certifications such as UL certification
To prevent explosions, it is advisable to charge your e-bike battery in a safe location, away from living spaces, and to avoid leaving it unattended while charging Regularly checking the battery for any signs of damage or unusual heating can also help prevent incidents

Choose your saddle wisely. This is the most obvious thing to look
at, but not necessarily the simplest. ...
Check your positioning. A reasonable bike fit, especially seat height, can make a real
difference and minimise side-to-side movement on the saddle. Use a good chamois (the cushioned part of cycling shorts) since this is your skin’s first point of contact. Again, a chamois which is perfect for one rider might not suit another, but generally speaking, more expensive shorts use better quality material and have had more thought put into the design and shape. Look for a chamois with few or no seams, so that there is less friction against the skin.
Try chamois cream. Plenty of the pros swear by it. It works in two ways. Firstly, it kills off the bacteria which can lead to inflammation of the skin, and secondly, it acts as a lubricant and reduces the friction and rubbing between the skin and the shorts.
Keep it clean. Never use shorts two days in a row without thoroughly washing them, even if you only did an easy ride in dry weather. Change out of your cycling shorts as soon as you get inside and shower straight away, making sure that you dry yourself well before getting dressed into your normal clothes. https://www.bikeradar.com/gear/article/how-to-avoid-and-treat-saddle-sores-25103/
https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/knowledge/article/izn20140123-All-Cycling-Are-you-sitting-comfortably--0
*How to Treat Saddle Sores*** ([https://www.cyclingabout.com/treat-prevent-saddle-sores/**](https://www.cyclingabout.com/treat-prevent-saddle-sores/)**) **
Take your cycling shorts off- As soon as
you’ve finished your ride, change out of your cycling clothes and into loose fitting clothes.
Stay dry-** You’ll want maximum airflow to your downstairs region to dry out the infected area. Go without underwear at night and you’ll speed up the healing process.
Stay clean- The best thing you can do is to keep your saddle sores clean. Wash them with warm soapy water once a day when you can. It should go without saying that you shouldn’t wear dirty cycling shorts with saddle sores.
Time off- It’s best to take a rest day if you’ve got some saddle
sores. Skin irritations really like having a break from the bike seat!
Antibacterial/antiseptic infection creams- There are many creams on
the market, but the popular ones are Haemorrhoid cream & nappy rash cream.
These creams can help treat saddle sores overnight if you apply them directly
onto the infected area.
Use different gear- If you have to ride, use a different pair of (clean!) cycling shorts*** or ensure the last pair have been
cleaned well. When I’m not travelling, I use different bikes with different seats and different shorts. With a combination of these, my body doesn’t get the chance to be tired of the one seat.
If the saddle sores are really infected… see a doctor- Like
any bad infection, you’ll possibly need to think about using prescription
antibiotics. This is not a common scenario, but it can happen.

It is a more stress-relieving and often quicker way to travel to a destination than sitting in a queue of cars.
It can help bring communities together in spread-out neighborhoods, providing a means of exploring the city. Economic and Urban Development Advantages It is viewed as a pretty cool tool with transformational capabilities beyond just recreation.
Investing in cycling infrastructure generates significant economic returns (e.g., Nordic countries found a one-euro investment yields an eight-euro return due to reduced environmental impact and medical costs).
Investments in bike infrastructure have spurred major private funding for housing and urban renewal (e.g., over two billion dollars in private investment near Minneapolis's Midtown Greenway).
Choosing not to own a car can be financially equivalent to $100,000 in mortgage value, allowing people to afford homes in more walkable and bikeable neighborhoods in the city centre.
Government policy protecting vulnerable travelers (pedestrians and cyclists) leads to decades of health and economic benefits for a country (as seen in the Netherlands). Durability and Consistency (Long-Term Use) Cycling is an activity that can be sustained over many years.
Once hooked, people continue riding bikes for the rest of their lives.

Koga All Terrain bike

Ultimate Touring Bike #youtube albeit an analogue bike still

Dutch cycling history

-- Multi modal Transport is our future!

- A Ride Leader is responsible for the overall management, safety, and enjoyment of the group.
- ### Pre-Ride Planning & Briefing
- Risk Assessment: Identify potential hazards (steep descents, busy junctions, narrow lanes) and check weather conditions.
- Route Familiarity: Ideally, the leader should have "recced" the route recently to check for new roadworks or surface issues.
- The Safety Briefing: Before setting off, a leader must:
- Explain the route, distance, and planned stops.
- Introduce the Back Marker (or "Sweep").
- Review group riding etiquette (e.g., hand signals, shouting "Car up/down," "Hole," or "Easy").
- Take a headcount and record emergency contact (ICE) details for all riders.
- ### Group Management
- Group Size: It is standard practice to split large groups into smaller "pods" of 6 to 12 riders to allow traffic to overtake safely.
- The "Non-Drop" Policy: In many club settings, the leader ensures the pace is governed by the slowest rider, regrouping at the top of hills and after junctions.
- Positioning: The leader does not always have to be at the front but must be in a position to control the pace and communicate with the group. --- collapsed:: true Marshals typically operate in a fixed position (stationary) during an event or at the front/rear of a moving group (mobile). Traffic Control: Under standard UK law, a cycle marshal has no power to stop or direct traffic. They can only warn riders of hazards and alert motorists to the presence of a race or ride.
The "Lollipop" Exception: Some marshals trained under the Accredited Marshal Scheme (AMS) or the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS) may be legally empowered to stop traffic using an approved "Stop" sign, provided the event has police and local authority approval.
Communication: Marshals should use whistles or flags to signal to riders and each other. Shouts should be short and loud (e.g., "Car, keep tight!"). Corner Marshals: Their primary job is twofold: alerting road users to the ride and informing riders of the direction to take. Human Signposts: In non-race events, marshals are often used at complex junctions to ensure no one takes a wrong turn, standing in a prominent, safe location off the main carriageway. collapsed:: true UK Legal Standing: Under UK civil law, a Ride Leader owes a Duty of Care to the group. Completing a written risk assessment (even a simple one) is the primary defense against claims of negligence should an incident occur during a club ride.
Safety Management Systems used by British Cycling are highly structured, involving formal risk assessments and incident reporting protocols that mirror industrial safety standards.
UK-Specific Regulation: The Cycle Racing on the Highway Regulations 1960 is the foundational legislation for competitive events. For social or club rides, the Highway Code remains the primary legal framework, particularly Rule 66 which covers group riding.
Local Application: In the UK, many clubs use tools like Spond or British Cycling's Dashboard to manage the administrative side (insurance, rider lists, and leader certifications) to ensure "Duty of Care" is met.
Insurance: Most UK cycle insurance providers (e.g., Laka, Yellow Jersey, or British Cycling membership) require that "organized" rides follow documented safety procedures below to remain valid. collapsed:: true A ride leader's kit is designed for "roadside stabilization" rather than long-term care. It focuses on common cycling injuries: abrasions (road rash), minor cuts, and sprains.
Core Medical Supplies Antiseptic Wipes: Alcohol-free for cleaning wounds without stinging.
Sterile Dressings: A variety of sizes (medium and large) for larger abrasions.
Adhesive Plasters: Wash-proof and varied sizes (including "knuckle" shapes).
Micropore Tape: To secure dressings or makeshift bandages.
Triangular Bandage: For immobilizing a collarbone or arm injury (common in falls).
Disposable Gloves: At least two pairs of nitrile (latex-free) gloves. Cycling-Specific Additions Saline Pods: 20ml pods for flushing grit or insects out of eyes or cleaning deep gravel rash.
Safety Pins: To secure bandages or repair torn clothing/straps in an emergency.
Resuscitation Shield: A pocket mask or face shield for CPR.
Foil Emergency Blanket: Critical for preventing shock or hypothermia if a rider is immobilized in cold/wet UK weather. Administrative/Safety Items Tough-Cut Scissors: For cutting through Lycra or base layers to access an injury. Incident Report Forms: Small notepad and pen to record the time of the accident and symptoms. ICE (In Case of Emergency) Card: A master list of the group's emergency contacts and known allergies. insurance is void** if your First Aid qualification (usually a 2-day outdoor-specific course) has expired.
Duty of Care: Having a certified leader means the "system" (the ride) has been verified by a National Governing Body (NGB), which is the first thing an insurer will check in a claim
Role Redundancy Primary First Aider: Usually the Ride Leader (due to certification requirements).
Secondary First Aider: Ideally the Back Marker or a designated "Sweep."
Benefit: If the Ride Leader is the one who crashes, a secondary first aider ensures the system doesn't collapse.
The Dual-Role Framework While one person can hold both titles, the responsibilities must be clearly defined during an incident. The Dilemma: If a serious accident occurs, the Ride Leader must manage the entire group's safety (traffic control, keeping other riders off the road, calling emergency services), while the First Aider must focus exclusively on the casualty.
The Best Practice: On rides with more than 8–10 people, it is highly recommended to have a separate Back Marker who is also First Aid trained. This allows the Leader to manage the scene while the Back Marker treats the individual. British Cycling/Cycling UK: To validate the "Ride Leader" insurance, the leader must hold a valid First Aid certificate. In this case, the insurer expects the leader to be the primary first aid provider.
Ratio Guidance: For larger organized events (Sportives), the ratio is usually 1 First Aider per 50 riders, but for lead rides, the Leader is the default. Incident Management Hierarchy Scene Safety: (Leader Role) Stop traffic, move the group to a safe verge.
Casualty Assessment: (First Aid Role) ABC (Airway, Breathing, Circulation).
Communication: (Leader Role) Contact emergency services with precise location (e.g., What3Words).
Logistics: (Leader/First Aid Role) Decide if the ride continues or is abandoned. collapsed:: true In a UK context, a risk assessment is a "living document." It identifies hazards and assigns a Risk Rating based on Likelihood vs. Severity.
Infrastructure Hazards Junctions/Roundabouts: High-risk areas for vehicle-cyclist interaction. Control: Brief the group to "take the lane" (primary position) to prevent dangerous overtakes. Surface Conditions: Potholes, loose gravel on corners, or slippery cattle grids. Control: Use hand signals and vocalize ("Hole left!", "Gravel!") to those behind. Narrow Lanes: Risk of "head-on" encounters with farm machinery or cars. Control: Use a "single file" command in advance of blind bends. Environmental Hazards Weather: Wind (crosswinds on bridges), Rain (reduced braking efficiency), or Ice. Control: Pre-ride check 1 hour before start; cancel or reroute if "Yellow" weather warnings are in place. Light Levels: Riding at dusk or through heavily wooded areas. Control: Mandatory front and rear lights for all participants. Human Factors Varying Abilities: Faster riders "half-wheeling" or slower riders falling behind. Control: Designate a "Back Marker" and set a maximum pace for the front of the group. Mechanical Failure: Snapped chains or punctures in dangerous locations. Control: Move the rider and the group to a "safe haven" (verge or driveway) before starting repairs. collapsed:: true In the UK, training and certification are the primary ways to bridge the gap between "best effort" safety and legal/insurance protection. The most recognized pathways are through British Cycling and Cycling UK. These qualifications are designed to validate your competence and, crucially, unlock professional-grade insurance. Level 1: For leading small groups on low-traffic roads and cycle paths.
Level 2: Covers more complex group management, longer distances, and advanced risk assessment.
The Insurance Link: Once you pass, you can access Professional Indemnity (£5m) and Public Liability (£15m) insurance. Note: To keep this insurance active, you must maintain a British Cycling "Ride" level membership (or higher) and a valid First Aid certificate. Focus: Aimed at club volunteers and charity event organizers. It covers technical skills, group "snaking" (moving a group as one unit), and legal responsibilities. The Insurance Link: If you lead for an Affiliated Club, Cycling UK provides Organisers’ Liability insurance (up to £10m). This protects the leader personally if a participant or third party sues for negligence. Marshalling is split into two categories: "Informal" (for clubs) and "Accredited" (for legal traffic control). Purpose: In the UK, a standard marshal cannot legally stop traffic. However, marshals who complete this British Cycling/Police-approved training are granted legal powers under the Road Traffic Act to stop vehicles using an approved "Stop" sign.
Requirements: You must be 18+, have a valid driving license, and undergo a specific awareness program covering conflict resolution and traffic law. Purpose: For competitive road racing and sportives. Training: An online "Registered Marshal" module on the BC Learning Hub. Insurance: Provides Personal Accident Insurance and enhanced liability cover while volunteering at registered events. For London-based training, there is a mix of community-led "introductory" courses and formal "National Governing Body" (NGB) certifications that unlock the higher-tier insurance levels.
Below are the key providers and upcoming dates for London in 2026. These providers offer courses specifically for leading groups on the road or at community events. Vancouver [1] Regional Dominance: The list is almost exclusively comprised of mainland European cities [3]. The only exceptions are three Canadian cities: Vancouver (#30), Quebec (#29), and Moral (#15) [1, 3]. Cities from the UK, USA, Asia, Africa, and Australia are completely absent from the top 30 [3].
The Ranking Organization: The index is published by Copenhagenize, an organization founded by Mikail Cville Anderson that specializes in engineering solutions for everyday urban cycling [4].
Expert vs. User Perspective: The sources highlight a discrepancy between data-driven statistics and lived experience [5, 6]. For example, while Paris ranks #5 due to impressive infrastructure growth, it is described by some as a "dangerous mess" on the ground [6]. Conversely, Amsterdam ranks #4 and is statistically perfect, but can feel "overwhelming" or "intimidating" to newcomers [6].
Methodology: This edition used an upgraded 13-indicator framework with more transparent scoring [7]. Indicators include lane protection, network density, and policy support [5]. To be considered, a city generally needs at least 250,000 inhabitants, though some smaller capitals are included [7]. Understanding these rankings is like reading a restaurant review based on a kitchen inspection; the report tells you that the equipment is high-end and the safety standards are met (the data), but it doesn't always tell you if the meal actually tastes good to the person eating it (the user experience) [6, 8, 9]. collapsed:: true When it comes to the best cities for biking, the gold standard is usually set by the Copenhagenize Index, which released its most recent rankings in late 2024 for the 2025 cycle. While European cities continue to dominate, several global cities are making massive strides in safety and infrastructure.
Here are the best cities to bike in the world for 2025: Utrecht, Netherlands (The World Leader)
Utrecht has officially surpassed Copenhagen as the world's most bike-friendly city. It is home to the world’s largest bicycle parking garage (holding 12,500 bikes) and has a culture where nearly one-third of all trips are made by bicycle. The city is designed around the "flow" of cyclists rather than cars. Copenhagen, Denmark
Long the "gold standard," Copenhagen remains a paradise for riders. It boasts the highest density of protected cycle tracks globally—roughly 52 km for every 100 km of roadway. It is famous for its "Cycle Superhighways" that allow commuters to ride in from the suburbs without ever hitting a traffic light. Paris, France (The Rising Star)
Paris is currently undergoing a "cycling renaissance." Under Mayor Anne Hidalgo, the city has transformed from a car-clogged capital to a bike haven. It recently saw its bike modal share jump from 5% to 11% in just five years, with massive investments in protected lanes along major arteries like the Rue de Rivoli. Ghent & Antwerp, Belgium Ghent: Known for its massive car-free city center, making it a stress-free environment for beginners.
Antwerp: A leader in "bike highways" and innovative bike-sharing systems. Helsinki, Finland
Helsinki is a global leader in winter cycling. The city clears snow from its 150 km of bike lanes before it clears the roads for cars. In 2025, it achieved a historic milestone: a full year with zero traffic fatalities, largely thanks to its separated infrastructure.
Global Leaders Outside of Europe
While Europe holds 27 of the top 30 spots in global rankings, a few other cities are setting the pace: What makes these cities the "best"? Separated Infrastructure: Physical barriers (curbs or planters) between bikes and cars.
Prioritized Safety: Lower speed limits for cars (usually 30 km/h or 20 mph).
Connectivity: A network that actually goes where people want to go (work, school, groceries) rather than just through parks.
Ample Parking: Secure, high-capacity storage at transit hubs. When you correlate global cycling rankings with the top-rated retirement destinations for 2025, a specific list of "high-quality-of-life" cities emerges. These locations offer a unique combination of high-tier infrastructure, temperate climates, safety, and accessible healthcare.
The following cities are currently the most popular for "cycling retirees" who prioritize active longevity: Valencia, Spain (The Balanced Mediterranean Choice)
Valencia has skyrocketed in popularity for 2025 because it is perfectly flat, making it accessible for all ages. Retirement Appeal: Low cost of living compared to Northern Europe, high safety, and a world-class healthcare system.
Cycling Feature: The Jardín del Turia, a 9-kilometer-long park in a converted riverbed, allows you to cross the entire city without ever seeing a car.
User Rating: Ranked as one of the best cities for expat retirees due to its "300 days of sunshine" and the ciclocalles (bike-priority streets). Cascais, Portugal (Upscale Coastal Living)
Located just 30 minutes from Lisbon, Cascais is a premier destination for those using Portugal's D7 retirement visa. Retirement Appeal: A large English-speaking expat community, stunning Atlantic views, and tax incentives for retirees.
Cycling Feature: The city maintains a dedicated coastal bike path that runs for miles along the ocean toward Guincho Beach. It is widely praised for being wide and well-separated from traffic. Victoria, BC, Canada (The "Cycling Capital of Canada")
For those looking at North America, Victoria is the top pick for retirees who want to avoid the harsh Canadian winters. Retirement Appeal: The mildest climate in Canada and a slower, more "garden-city" pace of life.
Cycling Feature: The Galloping Goose Regional Trail, a 55-kilometer former railway line that is entirely car-free and connects the city to scenic rural areas. Davis, California, USA (The Domestic Gold Standard)
If you are looking to stay within the U.S., Davis remains the quintessential "bike town" for active seniors. Retirement Appeal: Home to a major university, providing great cultural amenities and a "lifelong learning" atmosphere.
Cycling Feature: Over 95% of major arterials in Davis have bike lanes, and it has the highest per-capita bike usage in the country. It’s famously the home of the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame. Vienna, Austria (Cultural Heritage & Safety)
Vienna consistently ranks at the top of "World's Most Liveable City" lists and has made massive investments in 2024–2025 to improve its bike network for an aging population. Retirement Appeal: Exceptional public transit (for when you don't want to ride), high safety scores, and a world-class arts scene.
Cycling Feature: The Danube Cycle Path is one of the most famous long-distance routes in Europe, allowing retirees to take easy, flat day-trips into the countryside.
Comparison Matrix for Retiring Cyclists (2025)

|---|---|---|---|
| Valencia | Very Flat | 300+ Sunny Days | Turia Riverbed Park |
| Cascais | Coastal | Favorable Tax Laws | Scenic Ocean Route |
| Victoria | Moderate | Mildest Canadian Air | Galloping Goose Trail |
| Vienna | Mostly Flat | Best Public Transit | Danube River Path |
| Tucson, AZ | Desert Flat | Affordable Housing | The Loop (131 miles) |
Key Factors for Biking in Retirement
When choosing a retirement city for cycling, the "Network" matters more than "Lane Miles." Look for these three features: Low Stress Routes: Does the city have "Quiet Streets" where cars are limited to 20-30 km/h? E-Bike Friendly: Since many retirees use e-bikes to handle hills or longer distances, does the city have secure, ground-level charging and parking? Transit Integration: Can you put your bike on a bus or train if you get tired halfway through your ride? (Vienna and Tokyo excel at this).

Cool Down

Submerge in fresh water and soak for 2 hours. (This is critical for the 22-minute pressure cycle).• Soya Rehydration: Soak soya chunks in hot water for 15 mins. Squeeze them out very firmly to remove the "beany" liquid.• Marination: In a large bowl, whisk the Greek yogurt, ginger-garlic paste, and the entire 50g packet of MDH masala. Add the squeezed soya chunks and toss to coat. Let sit for at least 30 mins while the rice finishes soaking.• Set Pot to Sauté. Fry onions in oil/ghee until golden.• Add potatoes and the marinated soya (including all the yogurt/spice mix).• Sauté for 5 mins until the raw smell of the ginger-garlic paste disappears. Add tomatoes.• Deglaze (In-Pot): Pour in 1/2 cup water directly over the sizzling ingredients. Use a wooden or silicone spoon to vigorously scrape the bottom of the pot. You will feel the "stuck" bits (the fond) lift off. Ensure the bottom feels completely smooth to the touch of the spoon. Do not remove the food to do this.• The Volume: 500g of dry rice equals 2.5 cups.• The Calculation: Use 3 cups of water.• The Layering: Drain the soaked rice. Layer it on top of the protein/vegetable mixture. Pour the 3 cups of water gently over the rice (using a spatula to break the fall so it doesn't disturb the layers).• The Cycle: Close lid. High Pressure for 22 minutes.• Natural Pressure Release (NPR) for 10 mins.• NHS Safety: Immediately transfer to shallow trays and cool within 90 minutes. Refrigerate for 24 hours.• Pre-Saturation Kinetics: Explain to your son that Phase 1 is a mass transfer operation. The 2-hour soak allows the water to achieve a uniform concentration gradient throughout the rice grain's cross-section.• Deglazing & Heat Flux: In a Hot Pot, the "Burn" sensor is a safety thermostat located under the heating element.• The Fond: The stuck bits of yogurt and starch create a layer of high thermal resistance ().• Thermal Runaway: If not deglazed, the sensor detects a rapid temperature spike (because the heat cannot dissipate into the liquid) and triggers an emergency shutdown.• The Solution: Deglazing uses the solvent (water) to dissolve the solutes, restoring efficient convective heat transfer between the base of the pot and the water.• Per Serving (1/4 recipe): ~26.8g Protein.• Health Tip (Age 56): Using the deglazing liquid ensures you don't lose any of the concentrated MDH spices, which are rich in antioxidants like turmeric and cloves.• Safety Reminder: Reheat to 75°C tomorrow using the "Steam" or "Keep Warm" function to maintain the moisture balance.• UK Produce: Use standard UK medium-sized potatoes (tennis ball size) to ensure the starch-to-spice ratio is balanced.

<figure><img src="."></figure>

IMG_0171 1

<figure><img src="."></figure>

IMG_0171

<figure><img src="."></figure>
